His first day back to school after the new year of 1941, James Patrick Keller’s teacher at Cottonwood Independent School reminded him and all twelve of the students above 8th grade about the task of keeping a journal. One of the local feed companies gave away books that were perfect for this purpose, and she gave one to each student. James figured the first book would last him for years. The first book lasted three months and became Cottonwood Journal. At the end of that first three months, Miss Agus gave him two more books. By writing small and filling every inch, the second two notebooks lasted from the first week of April through June. His third three months July, August and September of 1941, also filled two of the spiral notebook journals. Cottonwood Journal III is that third quarter of 1941. During this time, James made a conscious change as he wrote the third of the series of journals. He moved into a more ‘narrative’ form of writing, simply because he enjoyed it.
